 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres 16 April 1971 - - March 31, 1995) also known as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most well-known performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin charts of songs. With regards to her style of dress media outlets have dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. Her clothes choices are what brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by various media outlets. She was often criticised during the 1980s and she was refused performances at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. But her popularity increased when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. She was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. At the time, her brother was her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her career. "Como la Flor" is one of the singles, became her most adored hit song. Live! (1993) won Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to be awarded this distinction. In 1994 she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as having been the cause of Tejano music's first commercially viable era and it became one of the most loved Latin music subgenres of the time.
